#07278 Pioneer America – This 1/6th plate daguerreotype appears in the
October 1994 issue of The Daguerreian Forum a catalog of
Daguerreotypes offered by Dennis Waters. This plate is offered at its
original 13 year old price! I’ll let Dennis describe this one.
“From a house in Salt Lake, Utah,” was the original description given to
me by a dealer when I purchased the unique sixth plate. My
interpretation is that the couple on the right are being visited by a very
tall, lanky gentleman, at their home. They are standing on crude,
wooden steps. The front door has been thrown open and the light spots
above the woman’s head are windows in the rear of the house. Several
varieties of climbing vines flank the folks and reach upwards across the
clapboards. The handsome visitor was an important person and the
occasion of his presence there had tremendous significance. Why else
would a daguerreotypist be commissioned to record the event? The key
to deciphering the resealed plate, which has exceptional contrast and
depth even though it was previously cleaned by an unknown method lies
in identifying the aristocratic man. There are slight wipes over the
entire surface and a teeny scratch across his chest. Spotty, brown and
blue retarnish has collected on the plate, but I must categorically state
that the strength and prominence are not diminished! The hallmark on
the plate is NP 40 and after close, physical examination, I estimate that
the meeting was circa 1850. The leather case is not original. $1800.00
