Fighter, Author. A lifelong soldier who had fought
Apaches, Sioux, and Nez Perce, King wrote
Campaigning with Crook: The Fifth Cavalry in Sioux
War of 1876 and numerous other books and stories
dealing with military life in the West. He served as
brigadier general of volunteers during the Spanish-
American War and Philippine Insurrection. Spanish-
American War-date ANS, 4 ¼” x 7: imprinted The Army
and Navy Club, Washington stationary, to an unnamed
recipient shortly before King’s promotion to brigadier
general of volunteers. “It is always a pleasure to serve a
fellow Badger and Milwaukeean - even in these days of
war and rumors of war. Charles King, Capt. U.S.
Army. May 5th ‘98.” Toned areas at corners; two light
