1861 Oil Field LS on patriotic stationery, 3pp, 8vo, Plomrer, Aug.
15, 1861. A.W. Alsbach to his brother about oil business. Mentions
the Tionesta and Oil Creeks in northwest Pennsylvania and reports on
oil drilling operations. Stopped boring one well and terminated
pumping at one of the others, but new finds develop. “...Old Joe Kelly
struck a vein at 540 feet and pumps 25 barrels per day...McClintock’s
big well is flowing about 400 barrels a day...there was a Steamboat at
oil creek this morning ” Wants his brother to put off going to war until
this fall or winter. “...come out there to run the oil business...I will
give you half of all I make...” Scarce early information on the very
beginning of the oil industry. $150.00
