1843 Thomas Hart Benton letter written from the Senate Chamber
with news of John C. Fremont's expedition  $425.00

The letter is written entirely in Sen. Benton's handwriting on 15 1/2" x
9 7/8" period paper folded in half. The text of the letter is as follows:

"Senate Chamber / Dec. 14, 1843

Dear Madam,

Have the pleasure to enclose you a letter from my daughter (Mrs.
Fremont,) and while I regret the loss of the one from your son, of
which it will inform you, I have to express my gratification at knowing
that it will convey to you news of his safety and health at the last
accounts.

Yours truly, / Thomas H. Benton"

The paper was folded so that the blank last page became the envelope.
The "envelope" is addressed to "Mrs. Talbot / F Street, / Washington
City".  The return address, which has been crossed out is: "Thomas H.
Benton / U. Senate".  An inscription in a different hand notes: "Col.
Benton Dec 14th 1843 about news of the Exped of Capt Fremont".
The original red sealing wax is still present.

Thomas Hart Benton was a U.S. Senator and Representative from
Missouri and the father-in-law of explorer John C. Fremont.  In 1843,
Fremont led an expedition which went into the Great Basin region
west of South Pass, then followed the Snake River and the Columbia
River to the Pacific coast.  Mrs Talbot's son was a part of the
expedition.
