Briggs, Henry Shaw (1824-1887) Brigadier General.  ALS, 3pp, 4to,
Relay House (Maryland), Tuesday 1p.m., June 4, 1861.  To his wife
Molly.  “...I should say that we are living with the belief that we shall
not be moved from this station or ordered home.  I hope that it may be
so for our situation could not be pleasanter.  It is said that General
Butler and the Secretary of War are very anxious to have us
transferred to the Guards Command, while General Scott insists that

Briggs, Henry S., brigadier-general, was born in Aug., 1824 and in 1844
graduated from Williams college.  He afterwards studied law and gained
some distinction as a lawyer, and in 1861 at the outbreak of the Civil war,
joined the Union army as colonel of the 1Oth Mass. volunteers.  At the
battle of Fair Oaks he distinguished himself, and on July 17, 1862, was
made a brigadier-general of volunteers.  He served throughout the war and
was at its close a member of the general court-martial in Washington,
D. C.  He was mustered out of the service Dec. 4, 1865
