Battle of Gettysburg (Picketts Charge)  4 pages 4to in ink front and back written
by a Georgia Confederate Officer (Probably Daniel Norwood Speer of the 60th
Georgia) who at the time was acting QM.  It reads in part,” Camp Gordon’s
Brigade, Agst 17th 1863

Brother Green,

…I wrote to you frequently while on the march in Pennsylvania before and after
the Gettysburg fight. I was at Gettysburg on the 3rd day had a position where I
could witness all the fight see the smoke from almost every battery on either side,
on the morning of the 4th we commenced the retreat the wagons in advance I still
acting QM for the Regt, was with my wagons and arrived in Williamsport a few
hours before young Jones did,  I was on picket in the streets of Williamsport in
command of the teamsters of our brigade. The next day we had a brisk little fight
and drove the enemy back…The army is recruiting very fast almost as strong as
when we entered Pennsylvania, yet the soldiers hearing from friends at home and
they are all so desponding, in fact already calcified that it is having a very bad
effect on the soldiers. What can men at home promise themselves if they yield to
the Yankees, even were they to give up the contest now every vestige of property
would be taken from them Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation would of course
be carried into effect and every other species of property would be confiscated,
indeed the men at home are the last people who ought to think of giving up the
contest, all of them should first come out and try their hand at least for a while
before doing so. Too much blood has been shed and two many good lives have
been lost to think of giving up the contest for anything short of an
acknowledgement of our independence. …I am looking every day for Capt Stiles
to return, he has been appointed QM by this father hence I will soon be able to
return to my company…There are a few men being furloughed from the Regt
Sergt Williams of Walker from Company “C” will get one.

A neat letter missing the last page with the name but enough names are in the
letter to be certain this is from a man in the 60th Georgia and the only acting QM
was Speer.  Nice content fairly priced at  $875. 00
