Washburn, C. C. (1818-1882) Major General. He
went into the war as colonel of the 2nd Wis. cavalry.
He was employed at first in Arkansas and rendered
such good service at Grand Coteau, La., and
elsewhere that he was promoted to brigadier-general
of volunteers in July, and major-general in Nov., 1862.
He bore a part in the operations about Vicksburg,
commanded the 13th corps in the Department of the
Gulf and a portion of it in Texas, where he took Fort
Esperanza on Matagorda bay. From April, 1864, he
had command of the District of West Tennessee at
Memphis. Perhaps best known for organizing a
company which later became General Mills.DS,
